In our house, if we couldn't find a place for some things, they were just thrown into the work room. This room became an ugly duckling, the room which wasn't finished…..
In the other areas of the house we knew how and where to place the furniture. For the work room our idea was that we should have two work/writing desks, with some type of storage. We visited many places looking for suitable desk units, which would fit into our house, but that turned out to be impossible. I had looked at the Pottery Barns web site and that was the picture I had when we were searching, so naturally enough I found nothing that matched those ideas!
In our old summer cottage we had two small doors to the children's room, and when we demolished the cottage to build Humlebacken, we saved all doors and windows, with the thought of possible reuse.
Thus a new idea was born……..we could use the two white mirror panelled doors as work benches, with a sheet of glass on top, giving a level surface. However we still had a problem to solve, drawers. No matter how and where we searched we couldn't find drawers to suit. Finally we took a set of drawers which were wrongly delivered to our kitchen, painted them white, and fitted suitable handles. This created a writing desk feeling, instead of them just looking like kitchen drawers. It was the perfect combination.
Located on the wall over the desks we fitted white shelving, a noticeboard and several small wooden boxes for storage. We bought office chairs in black skin, not to be romantic nor practical, but to create a contrast…. and it turned out well.
Finally, storage. We had the dream of site made cupboards, with our old summer windows as doors. Our skilled joiners who built our house, got the job! We looked after the repair and painting details. When the cupboards were finalised it really felt that the ugly duckling had become a beautiful swan! Our work room wasn't any longer a room where we just threw things into. It has become an organised space, where we enjoy spending time.
