The move into a completely new home

To move into a completely new home generates a fantastic feeling. To be the first to put something into a cupboard, the first to use the shower, the first to prepare a meal, the first to visit the bathroom, almost magical….. not forgetting to count those panes of glass in the bedroom window on that first night, before you go to sleep! (in our bedroom there were 19!)

I wouldn't say that I have moved home all that often in my life, however it has happened several times. There is always an element of excitement in moving, but to a new home, that is something special. Just to think that nobody-NOBODY- has slept in the house previously, nobody has used the bathrooms, nobody has used the kitchen. We are the first for everything. Maybe like being the first human on the moon (or maybe not, but not far away).

If you - like us - have taken time to plan your new home, then most often you will have had time to plan the move. If you - like us - have been in the process from its conception, then you have had total logistical control. Surprises….yes sometimes, but on the whole, everything worked perfectly.

Some Tips

Make sure you have a torch. The first evening will be very dark, especially if you have forgotten to organise lights.

Plan to have some flowers with you to give that homely feeling directly. In our kitchen, I had, from a very early stage, looked forward to finding a place for my “Mårbacka pelargoner”  in the Prince Eugen pots in the kitchen windows. They were nearly the first items we carried into the house. Every time I looked at the flowers in the window, I would pinch myself and think, have we really moved in?

Make sure you have rubbish bags available. There will be a surprisingly large amount of rubbish to dispose of. We took in our "rubbish wheel barrow" and placed it in the kitchen, where we collected all rubbish.

It isn't all fun to move home, it's hard work, tiring, dirty and  completely……absolutely……..fantastic!
